RadCom April 2024, Vol. 100, No. 4

RSGB Matters April 2024 9 Candidate elected as a Director unopposed Mark Jones, G0MGX Curriculum Vitae: A licensed amateur radio operator since 1984 with a keen interest in home construction and software. Author of the RSGB publication Microcontroller Know How. Previous RSGB construction competition winner in 2015 (A Starter for 10GHz). RSGB Board member from Apr 2018 – Oct 2019. Commercial experience in the Nuclear and Aviation sector with Rolls-Royce from 1994 to 2020 when I left through voluntary severance. During my time at Rolls-Royce, I achieved Principal and Chartered Engineer status. The last 10 years were spent in a highly technical & customer facing role delivering fuel burn and carbon reductions for key aviation clients. My many responsibilities included helping to manage change in the customer organisation. Since leaving Rolls-Royce I have set up my own business offering property maintenance services and have built a large client base including care homes, children’s homes, the local council, and many private clients. Personal Statement: I genuinely believe there are huge opportunities for the future growth and development of Amateur Radio in the UK that the RSGB must champion, and I am keen to contribute to the organisation that drive the overall direction and strategy forward into the future. The RSGB should not be afraid to embrace any necessary change to make if fit for purpose now and into the future. I was first licensed in 1984 and then sat and passed the Morse test to become G0MGX in 1989 and consider holding my licence to be a huge privilege. I have previously volunteered with the RSGB as an honorary officer coordinating AROS and then as a director between 2018 and 2019. More recently I authored the Microcontroller Know How RSGB title which I am told has sold well and proved popular. I have a large amount of relevant commercial and technical experience that I believe can be of benefit to the RSGB as we move forward. Regional Election Result In this year’s Regional Elections there were eight Regional Manager vacancies (Regions 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13). In Regions 2, 3, 5, 6 and 13 a single nomination was received and that candidate is, therefore, elected unopposed and will be invited to take up their role at the AGM. Their personal statements are shown here. In Regions 7, 11 and 13 no valid nominations were received. Region 2: Scotland & Northern Isles Jim Campbell, 2M0IAQ Since my election as the RR2 I have found the work to challenging but very interesting. I have endeavoured to maintain a close liaison with clubs by phone or email. I have made several visits to one school in particular and hope to follow up on emails sent to other Schools. I gave a talk to one School on the RSGB and was also asked to do a talk on basic Radio Theory and the introduction of Morse Code which the students enjoyed. We also celebrated one hundred years of the BBC in Scotland. Region 3 England North-West Martyn Bell, M0TEB I’ve had an interest since childhood as a short-wave listener and in 2000 quickly progressed to Full Licence. I’ve been involved with Furness ARS since I took my exams I run many special events throughout the year promoting Amateur Radio in our local area. Based in Barrow in Furness, I’ve held the position of District Representative for 12 months but feel left out up here. I’ve been taking many enquiries that should have been directed to the regional rep and I feel it would be better if I took on this role and try to bring region 3 together. Region 5 West Midlands Mark Savage, M0XIC I’ve been a member of the RSGB for 3 years. I have completed my Foundation/Intermediate and Full Licenses. I’m an active member of two Radio Clubs and Award Manager for UKBOTA a new HAM award scheme. I’m active across many of the Ham Radio Bands. I am a good communicator and manager of people. I seek to inspire learning and innovation in others though active learning and participation. I am good at problem solving and dealing professionally with issues in a polite and friendly manner. I am a good motivator and always seek to reward and inspire others. Region 6: North Wales Simon Taylor, MW0NWM Outside of amateur radio, I enjoy spending time with my family and taking our Jack Russell terriers out for walks. If I am elected as Regional Representative, I intend to continue the good work of the current incumbent Liz Cabban GW0ETU, by visiting local clubs and societies, promoting the work undertaken on their behalf by the RSGB. I would also like to support clubs with engaging local schools and universities in STEM activities, which will hopefully lead to more young people joining the hobby. Region 13: England East Midlands Robert (Bob) David Hambly, M0HAF I am a retired Civil Service Nursing manager with responsibility for 4,000 clients and 300 staff member. I am the founder of a national civil service scheme for intervention utilising both staff and client groups working alongside other teams within the East Midlands.
